Book Report
Emily Campbell

The book that I chose to read for my book report was Listening for Lions, by Gloria Whelan. It has 194 pages,

and was published in 2005 by Harper Trophy. I would rate this book ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩, 4 stars, on a scale of 1-5,

because I enjoyed it a lot, but some of the story went by very slowly. I did not like the slow parts, where not

much happened, but I really enjoyed the action filled parts. It was a very interesting book. The book was

written in the 1st person. One internal conflict that happened during the story was that both her parents died.

She would have felt very lonely and confused, and she had to deal with being on her own with no family, not

knowing what to do, all alone, with some wicked people around her.

✩ ✩ ✩ ✩
✩ ✩ ✩ ✩,

In Chu-Ju’s house, a young Chinese girl runs away from home, and experiences many new things, and learns

a lot about the world, even though sometimes she is alone with no where to go. In Listening for Lions, Rachel,

a young British girl, is the main character. Her parents die from a disease early in the book, and she also

suffers being alone, and when she goes to England she experiences a new place and a new way of life

just like Chu Ju did. I feel that Rachel is a very confident, strong, bold character, definitely in Africa, but in

England, where she didn't know

how to behave or what to expect, she became much more shy and self conscious.
