On a scale from one to five stars, five being the highest, I would rate this book Baboon by David Jones four stars. This 169 paged novel contains cultural information on the topic of Africa from the least expected point of view. Baboon was published in the USA by Annick Press in the year of 2007.
If I were to compare this book with another, I would compare it to the novel Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan. Koli, from Homeless Bird, faces the same conflict as Gerry in Baboon. The two main characters both become involved in conflicts where they are longing to be home and with their parents.
In this story, Gerry enters the body of a baboon after surviving a plane crash in the African veldt. He has to live alternating between sleeping rocks. He has to grow with the little food he can find. His human body is unconscious, therefore no one knows of his existence inside of a baboon. Not even his parents who study the troop. Gerry has to struggle to live among the other baboons. This story’s POV is in third person restricted.
He is also a compassionate person. He proves this when he finds the pilot of the plane crash dead. Gerry didn’t really like the pilot before the crash, but now Gerry feels bad when he finds him dead. Gerry is also funny in a way. Up in a tree he pokes one of the baboon bullies with a stick. This bully’s name is Lothar. Lothar seems to always pick on Gerry and steals his food. Lothar still doesn’t respect Gerry even after Gerry saves the troop from a farmer attacking them. This is another conflict that Gerry deals with as a baboon. The troop was lead to a corn field where they feasted until they were caught by the farmer. The farmer reacts by shooting several of the baboons. This chaos occurs until Gerry hits the farmer with his cudgel, leaving the farmer stunned. The baboons then have a chance to break free. This also shows how Gerry is very defensive toward the other baboons. Gerry starts to make friends with some of the other baboons. Another act of courage was when Gerry helped the troop from being attacked by a lion.
I enjoyed this book very much. In a way, it was much different from any of the other books that I have read in the past.
