If I was to rate Baboon on a scale of one to five stars, five being the highest rating, I would give Baboon three and a half stars.
The title of the book, if you may not know already, is Baboon. The author is David Jones. Baboon is not such a long book, with only 169 pages. Annick Press published Baboon in the year 2007.
Baboon
How They Compare
Freak the Mighty
Conflicts
Greg has to deal with a life that is truly abnormal. His parents are always traveling and he can’t just stay in one place, because of this he blames his parents for his problems.
Both books protagonists have to deal with everyday struggles because they’re different from most kids.
Two “freaks” are the main characters in the book. One has a deformed body and the other is made fun of because his dad murdered his mother. This leads to both being bullied by kids at school who don’t understand what they go through.
Setting
Baboon takes place in the savannahs of Africa.
In the savannahs, animals deal with bullies just like kids that go to school in normal society. The stronger one takes advantage of the one who is weaker.
FreaktheMighty takes place in a suburban American neighborhood.
POV
Baboon is written in first person point of view.
Both books are written from a first person point of view.
FreaktheMighty is also written in first person point of view.
Ease of Reading/Enjoyment Factor
Baboon was quite boring because there is little humor and little excitement. Although it was a boring book the reading level was 7th grade.
Baboon was less intriguing than FreaktheMighty, but Baboon was at 7th grade reading level, helping me improve my reading.
FreaktheMighty was probably one of the best books I ever read because there’s comedy, originality, drama, and suspense. I felt Freak the Mighty was below 7th grade reading level.
How Each is Resolved
Greg wakes from a coma and explains to the doctors that he was in a baboon’s body. He records on paper what this was like. He then returns to a more normal life.
The main characters become stronger by the end of the books.
Freak dies at the end from his disorder. Mighty is left by himself and is now mentally stronger and the bullies don’t bother him.
The point of view in Baboon is first person. The protagonist is Greg and he is also the narrator. Baboon takes place in the savannahs of Africa and in an airplane, during modern times.
Greg has to deal with internal and external conflict throughout the book. Greg has a lot of issues with himself because he didn’t have the most “normal childhood.” He does not have enough confidence in himself and is very rude to people. He struggles trying to fit in with everybody else because his parents travel a lot and he is always moving from place to place. Not having a normal childhood affects him internally. He always argues with his parents. His mother and father are baboon scientists and Greg sometimes hurts the baboons and says he hates them for ruining his life. As you may have noticed, Greg has a lot of external conflict. Greg’s personality in the book changes, in the beginning his personality is kind of mean and rude, but closer to the end he becomes a nicer person.
Baboon was not at all interesting. Half the time I was asleep, because it lacks excitement, humor, and good drama. I did enjoy learning actual facts about baboons and the new information it taught me. I would not recommend this book to friend who is not interested in baboons.
