Baboon Book Review

By: Wagner Manuel

Rating the book between one to five, five being the highest
The book is for teenagers and young adults. The idea of the story is interesting because, the book shows the whole story from the eyes of a baboon. So I would give the book a 4. The book was very well done, because of the story that had been told.
Factual information about the book

Comparing Baboon with another book we have read in humanities class
I would compare this book with would be the Kite Rider, because it brings the same influence in the book baboon. The Kite Rider is also about a boy who struggles after his losses a parent, and struggles a lot that also relates to the book Baboon.
Analyzing this book using literature terms
First of all, this book if shown in a first person. We know this because it is told from the point of view of Gerry (baboon). This helps because we see things through his perspective. However, he could only tell what he saw and what he thought, but could not tell us what others were thinking.
Describing the setting
The setting of the book baboon mostly took place in an African veldt in the Savannas in a city of Tanzania. It was surely the 21 century, because planes where already developed. The setting of the book took place in the jungles of Tanzania called Arusha.
Outline of one conflict
One of the main external conflicts in the book was, Gerry trying to adapt to being a baboon. He had to teach himself to become a baboon in a mind of a human which was very hard. Gerry also had to know how to get his on food in order to survive alone as a baboon. His hope of seeing his family again was so strong that he would have done anything just to turn back into what he was, a human.
Description of one character Gerry
Gerry was a kind baboon, who didn’t stop trying until he got to the top. He was also very intelligent because he had to come up with human ideas while inside a baboon’s body to defend himself. Gerry had a lot of courage, because even though he was weak and not as strong as the other baboons he still fought as far as his weal would go. Gerry was very self confident, when he was human and when a baboon. He was able to distinguish what was good for him and his friends in the troop.

Description of second character lothar
Lothar was the mean baboon. He would pick on the other baboons that weren’t mentally or physically strong like him. Lothar also hated new comers, which was why he tried to make Gerry’s life impossible. He loved to control things in the troop and was very selfish and self obsessed. I think his problem was that he wanted to be liked by the other baboons but, he wasn’t able to do it in a nice way so he decided to do it in the hard way.
Honest opinion about what is about this book that I enjoyed or didn’t like
What I liked about this book was that the begging of the story fitted in very well with the ending of the story. I also liked the first chapters, because it showed that even though he had the body of a baboon and the mind of a human, he still had difficulties adapting to the environment of how a baboon would live. What I didn’t like about the book was the some character died like Lothar he was a mean baboon but he should have died in my opinion.
